E-commerce Development

Get a free consultation

E-commerce development is the design, build and optimization of online stores engineered around one metric: revenue. A proper build gets the platform choice right, removes every friction point between product discovery and payment, and is structured so Google can crawl, understand and rank every product and category page. Most stores fail at at least two of those three.

Platform choice: the decision that shapes everything

The first question we ask is not “which platform do you like” but “how do you sell.” The answer determines the platform, and getting this wrong is the most expensive mistake in e-commerce.

We build on all three, which is why we can recommend honestly. An agency that only builds Shopify will tell you everything needs Shopify. The right platform is the one whose constraints you will never hit and whose costs you can live with for five years.

For UK businesses specifically, WooCommerce deserves a serious look: no per-transaction platform fees eating margin, full control over the SEO layer (URL structure, schema, content architecture), and no risk of a platform price rise repricing your business. Shopify wins on speed-to-launch and operational simplicity. We scope both and show you the five-year maths before you decide.

Conversion architecture: the anatomy of a store that sells

Traffic without conversion is an expensive hobby. Here is the build order we follow, because each layer multiplies the ones above it:

1. Speed as a foundation, not a feature

Deloitte’s research with Google found that improving mobile site speed by just 0.1 seconds lifted retail conversions by 8.4%. That is the return on milliseconds. We budget performance like money: image pipelines, minimal app/plugin weight, cached everything, and Core Web Vitals green before launch — not “we’ll optimize later,” which means never.

2. Category pages built to rank and convert

Category pages are where e-commerce SEO is won or lost. Ours carry unique, genuinely useful copy (not 50 words of keyword stuffing), faceted navigation that does not generate thousands of thin duplicate URLs, proper canonical tags, and product schema for rich results. A category page should answer the shopper’s question better than the nine competitors below it.

3. Product pages that remove doubt

Every product page needs: sharp imagery (multiple angles, zoom, lifestyle context), complete specifications, stock status, delivery information, returns policy, reviews, and related products. Missing any of these is a conversion leak, and leaks compound across thousands of SKUs.

4. Checkout with minimum friction

Baymard Institute’s research — an average of 50 studies — puts cart abandonment at 70.22%. The top fixable causes are extra costs sprung at checkout (40% of abandoners), forced account creation, and long confusing checkouts. Our checkouts show full costs early, offer guest checkout, minimize form fields, and work flawlessly on mobile — where, tellingly, conversion runs at just 1.8% versus 3.9% on desktop (Statista), even though mobile drives the majority of visits.

5. Trust signals everywhere

Reviews, clear returns, secure payment badges, real contact details, delivery promises kept. In our experience, trust deficits kill more sales than price differences — shoppers will pay slightly more to buy from a store they believe in.

SEO for product and catalog pages

E-commerce SEO has failure modes that brochure sites never encounter: thousands of near-duplicate product pages, faceted navigation spawning infinite URL combinations, out-of-stock pages leaking link equity, and thin manufacturer descriptions duplicated across fifty retailers.

Our approach, refined across builds: canonical architecture decided before launch (which pages should exist in Google’s index and which should not), unique content for money pages with templates that scale, product and review schema throughout, internal linking that pushes authority to category pages, and a content layer (guides, comparisons, buying advice) that captures informational queries and feeds the commercial pages. Our content strategy services and technical SEO services define these layers, and e-commerce builds get both from the start.

The mobile reality

The global average e-commerce conversion rate sits around 2.5% (Smart Insights, Q3 2025) — and that average hides a split that should alarm every store owner: desktop converts at 3.9% while mobile manages only 1.8% (Statista), despite mobile accounting for the majority of retail site visits. Your store is almost certainly designed on a desktop, reviewed on a desktop, and approved on a desktop — then shopped on a phone. We design and test mobile-first, because that is where the customers are and where the leaks are biggest. Closing even part of that mobile gap is usually the highest-ROI work a store can do.

When not to build custom

Honesty again. Do not commission a custom build if a £29/month Shopify template would do the job — early-stage stores validating a product should launch cheap and fast, then invest once revenue proves the concept. Do not build complex custom functionality for edge cases that affect 1% of orders. And do not rebuild a store that is fundamentally fine but badly marketed; we have talked prospects out of rebuilds when the real problem was traffic quality, not the platform. A rebuild is major surgery — it should follow diagnosis, not precede it.

Frequently asked questions

How much does an e-commerce website cost?

A proper Shopify build typically runs £3,000–£10,000; WooCommerce £4,000–£15,000+; custom or headless £15,000–£50,000+. The range reflects catalogue size, integrations, custom functionality and migration complexity. What matters more than the build cost is the total cost of ownership over five years — platform fees, maintenance and the conversion rate the build delivers.

Shopify or WooCommerce — which is better?

Neither, universally. Shopify launches faster and runs simpler, at the cost of monthly and transaction fees plus less SEO flexibility. WooCommerce costs less over time and gives full control, but needs proper hosting and maintenance. We recommend from your catalogue, team, growth plans and five-year maths — we build both, so it is honest.

How long does an e-commerce build take?

Six to twelve weeks for most stores: strategy and design, build, product migration, payment and shipping setup, testing, launch. Large catalogues, complex integrations (ERP, warehouse, CRM) or custom functionality extend that. Data migration is usually the long pole — cleaning ten thousand product records takes the time it takes.

Can you migrate my store without losing rankings?

Yes, if planned properly. Migration SEO means full URL mapping with 301 redirects, preserved metadata and schema, content parity checks, and staged go-live with monitoring. Done right, you keep your rankings and often gain from the better platform. Done carelessly, migrations are how stores lose half their organic traffic overnight.

Will my store rank on Google?

It can, but e-commerce SEO is competitive and technical. Category and product pages need unique content, clean architecture, schema and authority — the same fundamentals as any SEO, applied to catalogue scale. Our builds ship SEO-ready, and our SEO programmes grow the traffic afterwards. A beautiful store with no traffic plan is a very expensive brochure.

Do you provide ongoing support after launch?

Yes. Stores need continuous care: platform updates, security monitoring, conversion optimization, and seasonal campaign support. Post-launch is when the real optimization starts — launch-day conversion rates are a baseline to beat, not a result to admire. Our maintenance and CRO work picks up where the build leaves off.
