How to Do Keyword Research: A Step-by-Step Guide

How to Do Keyword Research: A Step-by-Step Guide

Keyword research shows you the exact words customers use when they look for what you sell. Done well, it tells you which pages to build, what to write, and where the easiest wins are. Here is a process that works for most businesses.

Step 1: Start with your business, not a tool

Write down every service, product, and problem you solve, in the words a customer would use. Ask your sales team what people ask before they buy. These seed topics are more valuable than any tool suggestion.

Step 2: Expand with keyword tools

Paste your seed topics into Google Keyword Planner, Search Console, or a paid tool. Look at related searches, questions, and the phrases your competitors already rank for. Google’s own autocomplete and the People Also Ask box are free and reflect real behavior.

Step 3: Understand search intent

Every search has a purpose. Someone searching how to fix a leaking tap wants a guide. Someone searching plumber near me wants to hire. Match your page type to the intent: guides for learning, service pages for buying, comparison pages for choosing. Check the top results to see which type Google prefers.

Step 4: Judge difficulty and value

A keyword is worth targeting when three things line up:

  • Relevance: it matches something you actually sell.
  • Demand: enough people search for it to matter.
  • Chance: the current top results are not out of reach for your site.

New sites should lean toward specific, longer phrases. They have less volume but convert better and are easier to win.

Step 5: Group keywords into clusters

Do not create one page per keyword. Group phrases that share intent onto a single page, and connect related pages together. This is the base of a topic cluster, which we cover in our guide to building a content plan that ranks.

Step 6: Map keywords to pages

Create a simple sheet with each keyword group, the page that will target it, and its priority. Existing pages that almost rank are usually the quickest wins, so update those before writing new ones.

Step 7: Track and refine

After publishing, watch impressions, clicks, and positions in Search Console. Keywords you did not plan for often appear, and they show what to write next.
