Local SEO is the practice of making your business visible when nearby customers search for what you offer — in the Google map pack, local organic results, and increasingly in AI-generated answers. It combines your Google Business Profile, reviews, local citations, and location-relevant website content into one system. For businesses serving a geographic area, it is the highest-return marketing available.

Your Google Business Profile: the fields most businesses leave half-empty

Your Google Business Profile is the highest-leverage asset in local search. Google Maps lists over 250 million businesses and places and reaches more than 2 billion people a month — and your profile is what searchers see before your website. Yet most profiles we audit are a third complete: name, address, hours, nothing else. Google’s own research found complete profiles are 2.7 times more likely to be considered reputable, and the real gap is wider, because thin profiles also rank worse.

The fields that move the needle: primary category (the master switch — “Plumber”, not “Plumbing supplies”, plus additional categories for real service lines); services and products listed individually in plain language; genuine photos of team, work, and premises; weekly posts; and Q&A — anyone can ask or answer questions on your listing, so seed the ones you actually get and check monthly.

With 73% of consumers starting their latest local search on a mobile phone (BrightLocal’s 2026 consumer research of 1,227 US adults), treat the mobile view as the real profile: tap-to-call prominent, hours accurate including bank holidays, and a pin that leads to your door.

Review generation: systems that actually work

Reviews are the trust layer of local SEO and a real ranking input — Whitespark’s Local Search Ranking Factors survey attributes roughly 17% of local pack ranking weight to review signals. The commercial case is stronger: BrightLocal’s Local Consumer Review Survey 2024 found 88% of consumers would use a business that responds to all its reviews, versus 47% for one that responds to none, and 81% of consumers used Google to research local businesses.

What works is a system, not a plea. Ask when satisfaction peaks — the moment the job is signed off, the keys handed over. Remove friction: one tap from a direct review link or a QR code on the invoice. Never incentivize — Google removes incentivized reviews and can penalize the profile. Respond to everything: thank positive reviewers by name with a specific detail; for negative reviews, acknowledge briefly, apologize once, and move it offline with a phone number. And build velocity, not spikes — a steady stream of recent reviews beats fifty from 2021.

Local pack vs organic: different games, different levers

Businesses talk about “ranking on Google” as one thing. In local search it is two contests with different rules.

Local pack (map 3-pack)Local organic
Main leversProfile completeness, review quantity and recency, primary category, proximityWebsite content depth, backlinks, technical SEO health, on-page relevance
TimelineWeeks to months — neglected profiles often move fast once fixedMonths, the normal SEO compounding curve
Honest limitProximity can’t be optimized — you can’t win the pack three towns away without a real presenceNeeds genuine content and links; thin location pages won’t do it

The implication: a superb website with a neglected profile loses the pack, and a perfect profile with a weak website loses the organic clicks beneath it. Most local competitors are weak at one of the two — that gap is the opportunity.

Multi-location: location pages vs separate GBPs

One genuine location, one profile. Google allows a profile for each real location customers can visit or where staff work during stated hours — not for virtual offices, PO boxes, or coworking desks you never sit at. Ineligible listings get suspended, sometimes wiping out years of reviews overnight. Service-area businesses (plumbers, mobile detailers) set service areas and hide their address; they must not create a profile per town covered.

Location pages must earn their existence: unique photos, named staff, local reviews, embedded map, parking details — not the same 400 words with the town name swapped. Google treats near-duplicates as doorway pages. And avoid cannibalization: when two of your pages target neighboring towns, keep each page and each profile’s service list clearly scoped to its own geography, supported by a real content strategy per market.

NAP consistency and citations in 2026

An honest word on citations: they matter less than in 2016. Google’s entity resolution has improved, and a hundred low-quality listings won’t rank you. But the baseline still counts — inconsistent names, addresses, and phone numbers create the entity confusion that suppresses local rankings, and wrong listings send real customers to dead phone numbers.

Our 2026 approach: lock one canonical NAP — exact business name, one address format, one primary phone — used identically everywhere. Cover the UK directories real customers use: Yell, Thomson Local, Scoot, FreeIndex, and 192.com for general coverage; Trustpilot and Reviews.io where review-led trust matters; Checkatrade, Rated People, and TrustATrader for trades; Which? Trusted Traders for consumer confidence; Rightmove and Zoopla for estate agents; TripAdvisor for hospitality. Accuracy over volume — fifty correct listings beat five hundred auto-generated stubs — audited annually, since correcting the major data aggregators propagates outward.

Our local SEO process

  1. GBP and citation audit. We find everything: your live profile, duplicates, unclaimed listings, and every NAP inconsistency across the UK directories that matter — most businesses are surprised what exists under slight name variations.
  2. Profile rebuild. Categories corrected, services and products fully listed, description rewritten, Q&A seeded, photo program started. The highest-ROI fortnight in local SEO.
  3. Review system setup. Timing triggers mapped to your customer journey, frictionless review links and QR assets, response templates in your voice. We run a wider SEO audit alongside, because profile work and website work compound.
  4. Location content build. Service and location pages that are genuinely local — real photos, staff, and proof — structured so multi-location businesses never cannibalize themselves.
  5. Ongoing management and reporting. Weekly posts, Q&A monitoring, review velocity tracking — reported on calls, direction requests, and bookings, not just rankings. The phone ringing is the end; rankings are the means.

Frequently asked questions

How long does local SEO take to work?

A neglected Google Business Profile can show movement in 4–8 weeks once completed and fed with reviews. Competitive local pack rankings typically take 3–6 months of sustained work, and local organic rankings follow the normal SEO curve of 6–12 months. Anyone promising the top of the map pack in a fortnight is selling something risky.

How much does local SEO cost in the UK?

For a single location, serious local SEO typically runs £500–£1,500 a month, depending on competition and how much content is needed. Multi-location work scales with the number of profiles and location pages, usually £1,500–£4,000 a month. One-off profile rebuilds and citation cleanups generally fall between £800 and £2,500 as a project.

Can I rank in towns where I have no office?

Only up to a point. You can win local organic rankings in neighboring towns with strong, genuinely local content — but the map pack is heavily proximity-weighted, and proximity can’t be optimized away. Service-area businesses can legitimately cover a radius. Inventing addresses to game neighboring packs gets profiles suspended.

Should I respond to negative reviews?

Yes — always, and quickly. BrightLocal’s 2024 research found 88% of consumers would use a business that responds to all its reviews, versus 47% for one that responds to none. Acknowledge briefly, apologize once without groveling, and move the conversation offline with a direct number. Future customers judge the reply more than the complaint.

Do citations still matter in 2026?

Less than they used to, but the baseline still counts. Google’s improved entity resolution has reduced the ranking power of raw citation volume, yet inconsistent names, addresses, and phone numbers still create the entity confusion that suppresses local rankings. Get the major UK directories correct and consistent, audit annually, and put the real effort into reviews and profile completeness.

Can I create multiple Google Business Profiles for one business?

Only for genuinely distinct, staffed locations that customers can visit — or legitimate service-area coverage from a real base. Profiles for virtual offices, coworking desks, PO boxes, or invented service towns violate Google’s guidelines and risk suspension, which can wipe out years of reviews overnight. If an agency offers to “create 20 listings for 20 towns,” walk away.
